The hexagon is presumed to be a weather phenomenon (you can read about it here). Other theories include Saturn's lug nut, and a military headquarters. There's a naming contest on the Times.
I started teaching math at Coker College in 1991 after finishing a PhD at SIU-C, and transitioned fully to administration by 2001. I've also held positions at JCSU in Charlotte, Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, and am now at Furman University in Greenville, SC. I mainly do institutional research, to include learning outcomes and other types of student success.
